The Girl on the Train
21st October 2019 - 26th October 2019
Based on the best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins and the Dreamworks film adapted by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel
Starring Samantha Womack
Rachel Watson longs for a different life.
Her only escape is the perfect couple she watches through the train window every day, happy and in love. Or so it appears. When Rachel learns that the woman she’s been secretly watching has suddenly disappeared, she finds herself as a witness and even a suspect in a thrilling mystery in which she will face bigger revelations than she could ever have anticipated.
Adapted from Paula Hawkins’ novel – an international phenomenon selling over twenty million copies worldwide – and starring Samantha Womack and Oliver Farnworth, this gripping new play will keep you guessing until the final moment.
Samantha Womack has starred extensively in television, film and theatre. She is best known for playing Ronnie Mitchell in BBC1’s EastEnders with leading roles in Mount Pleasant and Game On, plus the recent box office hit films, The Kingsman series. As well as his extensive career on the stage, Oliver Farnworth has starred in Hollyoaks and as Andy Carver in ITV’s Coronation Street.

So it was Eastenders vs Corrie on stage in "The Girl on the Train" with Samantha Womack (Ronnie Mitchell in the soap) as Rachel Watson and Oliver Farnworth (Andy Carver in the Street) as Scott Hipwell, whose wife Megan (Kirsty Oswald) has gone missing. However, Rachel Watson claims to have seen the victim with another man from a train prior to her disappearance whilst it transpires that she may have seen her even later than that...
The set itself - and the moving images which greet the audience at the start and which are repeated throughout the show - is slick and realistic, switching between Rachel's somewhat down at heel flat which looks like there has just been a party (as she does like a drink though would never admit to it), Scott's apartment and the kitchen of her ex, Tom (Adam Jackson-Smith) as well as a bare police station room as she gives "evidence" to D. I. Gaskill (a dour John Dougall who had some of the best and most amusing lines). But Rachel is a fantasist - admittedly not helped by her penchant for the bottle - so can her explanations regarding the missing Megan be believed? Where exactly was she on the night that Megan disappeared? What is all this about a child being killed? Why does she hate Tom's new wife Anna (Lowena Melrose) so much? And what does psychiatrist Kamal Abdic (Naeem Hayat) know about the events seeing as he seems to have some kind of connection with Megan? There are some clever flashback sequences where Megan interacts with others as the story unfolds and the culprit is finally exposed...
The play certainly had the audience guessing who was the culprit with plenty of red herrings and false leads to confuse you (and poor D. I. Gaskill) as well as plenty of light-hearted moments too
The show was late starting but at least it did not suffer from the technical issues which it faced recently in Birmingham where the play had to be stopped twice and then restarted during the performance.

Show started 10/15 minutes late but was well worth the wait. Fantastic staging, great plot, twists and turns aplenty kept the audience on the the edge of their seats throughout. Samantha Womack, as Rachel, puts in a flawless performance and is completely believable. Oliver Farnworth as Scott is superb too. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended

Disappointingly wooden - particularly Samantha Womack’s performance.

Brilliantly staged and a wonderfully talented cast superbly lead by Samantha Womack who is on stage throughout the entire performance. Powerful yet subtly underplayed. "Wooden" it is not!!

Loved the book, didn't love the film so I wasn't sure about seeing it on stage. I'm so pleased that I did cos I really enjoyed it & it was more true to the book. Samantha Womack played Rachel brilliantly ~ I really don't understand the above review saying that she was wooden. The acting was very good by all of the cast. A great evening at the theatre ~ you could have heard a pin drop even though it was a sell out.
